Oh what a difference sleep can make for a person! Daniel and I decided to try something on Saturday night called the "Ferber method." We were in desperation for something that would work so Landon would start sleeping more. Lately Landon had been waking up after only about 2 or 3 hours in his crib and out of exhaustion I would just take him out to the living room and let him sleep on me for the rest of the night out there. I just was too tired and didnt have the energy at the end of the day to put up a crib fight to try to get him to sleep in his crib. I guess I was creating a problem because he was relying on me to get him to sleep and in the process I was spoiling him and I was sleeping sitting up waking up VERY tired in the morning.
So what is the Ferber method? Well it's basically allowing your baby to "cry it out" but in a very scheduled strict pattern. The first night after your baby has been crying for 5 minutes you go in and try to console him. You cannot pick the baby up but just gently quietly let him know you are there. Then you go 10 minutes of crying before you console him the next time. And then 15 minutes the rest of the time until the baby falls asleep. The next night you up the increments 5 minutes so its 10,15, 20 til the baby is asleep but last night Landon fell asleep after only about 5 minutes of crying...TOTAL! We are already seeing improvements. 11 hours of sleep the first night...and 12 the second!
Our next decision is going to be getting cloth diapers. Daniel has already been looking into the different kinds of cloth diapers that are out there. Landon, of course, will have some cool ones! We definitely do not want to go "old school" with pinning. They have cloth diapers now that are water proof and have snaps. We just figure that if we are doing part of our diaper changes with cloth diapers and part with disposable...in the long run we will have saved some money once he is out of diapers in 2 years.
